About Us

Donna Steele
Donna Steele (Book) Proud Founder of Steel Beam Theatre in St, Charles, Illinois in 2001, Donna has directed over 50 productions. She holds an MFA in Acting from SMU and her undergraduate training was at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. ( B.S., M.A.). A proud member of AEA, local stage work includes regional theaters Goodman and Steppenwolf in Chicago, as well as Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis and Nebraska Repertory. TV credits include Chicago Med, Power Book IV;FORCE, Next. Movies include Uncle John, Silent as the Grave, Later Days, and Demonic Toys: Jack Attack.

Amy Steele
Amy Steele (Composer, Music Director) With her degree in vocal performance from Indiana University, this is her first composer credit. As a performer, favorite shows include The Sound of Music (Beverly Arts Center), The Last 5 Years (Steel Beam Theatre), Striking 12 (BoHo); Little Women (JPAC); and Shout! The Mod Musical (Drury Lane Water Tower). She is also a teacher and Education Director with Chicago Kids Company.




Mary Hutchings Reed
Mary Hutchings Reed (Author) is a retired intellectual property lawyer, formerly a partner with Winston & Strawn and Sidley Austin, and the author of six works of fiction, in addition to the musical Fairways, which premiered at Steel Beam Theatre in 2006 under the direction of Donna Steele. Saluting the Sun, published in 2015, was awarded Foreword’s Book of the Year Awards INDIEFAB FINALIST.

Saluting the Sun had its world premiere production opening on November 24, 2023 at The Edge Theatre, 5451 N. Broadway in Chicago.
Cheryl Coons, renowned Award-winning librettist and lyricist, commented: “Brava! You brought the story to life in such an elegant way.”
She also commented the show has “contemporary relatable world, multi-generational appeal, accessible and appealing music,
highly original elements (tree house, glass harmonica, etc.),” and is “meaningful- something to say about both love and domestic abuse.”
